Shares of the following companies were among those that made noteworthy moves in the U.S. stock market on Tuesday:

Advancers

American Public Education Inc.  shares advanced 7.5% after the operator of the American Military University reported results topping forecasts.

Expeditors International of Washington Inc.  shares rose 6.8% after the cargo-ship manager reported quarterly earnings that beat analysts' expectations.

PMI Group Inc.  shares jumped more than 11%.

Radian Group Inc.  shares climbed 9.3% after the second-biggest mortgage insurer reported its losses narrowed more than Wall Street anticipated.

Decliners

American International Group Inc.  shares were down 5.9%.

Brocade Communications Systems  shares fell 23% after the network equipment maker's outlook disappointed.

CommScope Inc. fell almost 13% after the maker of communications cables offered a disappointing forecast.

Eastman Kodak Co.  shares were down 5.4%.

First Solar Inc.  shares declined 6.5%.

Healthsouth Corp. declined 6.9% after the provider of inpatient rehab services' forecast fell under expectations.

Lennar Corp.  shares were down 5.2%.

Massey Energy Co.  shares dropped 6.2% one day after a federal judge rejected a request to dismiss Massey's lawsuit against anti-mining activists.

MercadoLibre Inc. shares fell 7% after the Latin American online auctioneer reported revenue under expectations.

Orbitz Worldwide Inc. shares dropped almost 16% after the online travel site reported a bigger-than-expected loss for the fourth quarter.

Palm Inc. shares shed 10% of their value after the smartphone maker drew a broker's downgrade.

Patriot Coal Corp.  shares were down 8.9% after the coal producer said it had temporarily suspended operations at a mine in West Virginia.

RadioShack Corp. shares were down 6.8% after the retailer reported disappointing sales in some segments.

Sprint Nextel Corp. shares were off 5.5%.

Tenet Healthcare Corp. 

shares were off 9.5% after the hospital operator said its admissions fell in the fourth quarter.
